A film in the Philippines, released by ABS-CBN in October 2004, tells the story of a semi-autobiographical hero who is known by his code name Umibenga (lit. "substitute mother") or simply "Umiba" to his friends. He avenges injustices by fighting for justice and protecting the weak, sometimes with violent means when necessary. When he went through an existential crisis about his very purpose in life, he was inspired to create a web comic that became extremely successful on its own before being adapted into movies and TV series around Asia. He also made two friends who are also vigilantes, they are known as The Asian and The Ladybird. They use the same methods as Umiba does to fight for justice and protect the innocent. Umiba's enemies include gang members, corrupt officials and even criminals like Tinikling (the first antagonist he fought) and Bullet (an assassin hired to kill Umiba). The "Umibā" comics were adapted into a movie in 2007 starring Robin Padilla as the title character, with supporting cast members Yen Santos as "The Asian" (based on Urduja), Wendell Ramos as "The Ladybird" (based on Kalaban), and Jake Cuenca as Bullet. The movie also featured pre-existing characters such as "Bikoy" (based on Urduja and "Klobot") and "Mikoy" (based on Urduja and "Urhiyos"/"Bala"). The film was a commercial failure, earning only around $3,000,000 in the whole of the Philippines. It ranked at the 19th rank in gross earnings during its first full week in theaters. The English dubbed version of the 2007 film was released as a standalone DVD/Blu-ray combo pack featuring deleted scenes and behind-the-scenes footage available for download. Its soundtrack was also available to download from iTunes. The film was later released in South Korea in 2013 under its original title "Umibang" (외방), with Sam Hui playing the title role. Although less successful than its 2007 film, the movie was well received by critics, earning at least 2.0 out of 5 stars on several IMDb ratings. It earned about $2 million in total at the Korean box office. This series aired on GMA Network's "Primetime Bida" night block starting May 1, 2010 to January 25, 2011. The series was also aired in Singapore on MediaCorp Channel 5 on Friday night after the 9pm blockbuster movie. It was dubbed in Filipino in 2010 under by GMA Network. This is the first animated series based on "Umibā" comics, aired in 2006 on ABS-CBN's "Kapamilya Blockbusters" Sunday afternoon block. The anime is closely related to the 2007 film, including characters like "Bikoy", "Mikoy", and Bullet, which were omitted from the succeeding TV series (although Bikoy appears once in Season 1 Episode 6). cfa1e77820
